As a guest, I had the privilege of attending the Richmond Poverty Reduction Coalition’s annual general meeting. I was deeply impressed by the hardworking volunteers and their impactful work to combat poverty in Richmond. During the meeting, the staff from VCH delivered an insightful presentation on addressing the stigma associated with substance use.
We heard a touching testimony from a team member who highlighted the challenges of discrimination and rejection faced by individuals using substances, emphasizing the potential for recovery.
The staff provided four key points to help tackle the stigma associated with substance use:
1) Refrain from defining individuals solely by their substance use.
2) Approach them with respect and compassion.
3) Share information and challenge stereotypes.
4) Highlight that addiction is a medical condition, not a choice.
360 Community is dedicated to helping the community overcome stigma. You are warmly encouraged to join us in this important work.
