At an intercultural meeting organized by Richmond Multicultural Community Services today, a diverse group gathered to share their experiences as newcomers to Canada. Despite the small turnout, the attendees represented different cultural backgrounds, migration contexts, and age groups. Together, we expressed gratitude for Canada’s welcoming environment while discussing the challenges we faced during the settlement process. I was moved by the stories shared by some attendees, particularly those who were refugees. They spoke of their determination to find employment and contribute to their new community despite obstacles such as obtaining Canadian work experience and having their professional qualifications recognized. Their narratives debunked the misguided notion that newcomers rely solely on government support. This experience emphasized the importance of providing platforms for individuals to share their stories, fostering mutual understanding and empathy. By learning about each other’s challenges, we can better support one another in this shared journey of building a new life in Canada.
