I am deeply honored to have been invited to join the Richmond Anti-Racism Committee, an initiative spearheaded by Richmond Multicultural Community Services. The committee’s vision is clear and vital: to work hand in hand with every section of our community to combat racism and build a robust, intersectional society. This work seeks to foster equity, fairness, and justice for all and develop compassionate and supportive responses to bias, stereotypes, and racism.
At our first meeting, I was inspired by the diversity within the group—each of us bringing unique perspectives and stories shaped by our experiences. As we shared our journeys in this work, we also opened up about the profound effects racism has had on ourselves and our families. The conversations were heartfelt, sometimes tricky, but necessary. In these stories, I saw the power of vulnerability and the courage it takes to speak out for change.
One of the key points of agreement during our meeting was the need to host informal meet-and-greet events, opportunities for people to break free from their silos and genuinely connect. In a world where we often feel divided, these gatherings will serve as a way to bring our community closer, fostering understanding and unity.
I left the meeting feeling deeply grateful for the committee members’ openness and shared passion for creating a more inclusive and welcoming Richmond. There is something profoundly hopeful about being part of a group so committed to building bridges and breaking down barriers. I am excited about the journey ahead and look forward to our work together, knowing that change begins with community and connection.
