This morning, I had the pleasure of enjoying coffee with Dusty Momiji, a dedicated community support worker. Dusty’s story is one of incredible transformation and resilience. Not long ago, he faced significant challenges, struggling with alcoholism, substance abuse, and homelessness, all compounded by mental health issues. His journey is a powerful testament to faith, structure, and the human capacity for change.
Central to Dusty’s recovery are his Catholic faith, his commitment to the 12 Steps through Narcotics Anonymous (NA) and Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), and an unwavering desire to turn his life around. The 12 Steps have provided him with a vital framework for healing and self-reflection, allowing him to confront his struggles one day at a time while finding strength in community and accountability.
Dusty shares his journey and struggles with remarkable openness. His raw, real stories touch the heart. His courage and authenticity inspire us to reflect on how we can embrace and uplift those around us.
His gratitude toward God and appreciation for life give him the strength to welcome whatever comes his way, whether challenges or blessings. Dusty expresses joy in finding stability and contentment in his new home, feeling immense gratitude for the life he’s building and for the supportive people in his life.
Having now abstained from alcohol and substances for several years, Dusty has embraced a life filled with purpose and service. He speaks sincerely about his profound love for his work and the community he serves. His experiences have equipped him with unique insight and empathy, enabling him to connect deeply with others facing similar struggles.
I am truly grateful for Dusty’s time and the opportunity to hear his story. His experiences remind us of the importance of compassion, second chances, and the significant impact of faith, gratitude, and community in fostering transformation. I look forward to inviting Dusty to speak at one of our gatherings, confident that his powerful testimony will inspire and move others as it has touched me.
