Follow, Pray and Support 關注,禱告和支持

December 22nd, 2024 – Holiday Giving is Important, But How Can We Provide Ongoing Support and Lasting Solutions for the Marginalized?

Today, I had the privilege of delivering food to people in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (DTES) with Ziggy and others. When we arrived, I noticed fewer people in line than usual, as many had recently received their welfare benefits and were savoring them. While it was comforting to see fewer individuals in immediate need of food, it also inspired reflection on a broader truth: the ongoing need for care and support for the marginalized in our communities, year-round.

During our visit, I observed an organization offering free pizza to local residents. It’s uplifting to witness such acts of kindness, especially during the Christmas season when many organizations are eager to give back. These gestures are vital; they provide immediate relief and remind us of the transformative power of compassion. Yet, I couldn’t help but wonder: will this organization continue its work after Christmas, when the festive season has ended?

The food we provided today—sandwiches, yogurt, yogurt drinks, and fruits—was enough for one meal, but it’s clear that homelessness and poverty are ongoing issues. While temporary acts of kindness are essential, they do not address the deeper, persistent challenges that many face. What is truly needed goes beyond food for the day; it’s about long-term solutions: access to shelter, recovery resources, and opportunities for self-sufficiency. These approaches can create lasting change and help break the cycle of homelessness, poverty, and marginalization.

As a Christian and a priest, I often contemplate how many of us—individually and collectively as a church—are genuinely committed to supporting the most vulnerable in our communities, not just during the holidays but throughout the year. Are we focused on enjoying ourselves with music, feasts, and programs aimed at increasing attendance? Or are we ready to roll up our sleeves and take meaningful action to care for those in need, as Christ taught?

Christ’s birth is a powerful reminder of God’s love for the poor and marginalized. He entered the world in a humble manger, surrounded by those overlooked by society. Have we lost sight of the spirit of Christ’s birth—the call to serve, to show humility, and to care for those on the margins? The message of Christmas transcends celebration and comfort; it invites us to embrace the example of Christ, who came to serve and love those in need.

As we reflect on the holiday season, let us ask ourselves: How can we ensure our acts of kindness extend beyond this season? How can we, as individuals and as a community, provide ongoing support and implement lasting solutions to address the root causes of homelessness, poverty, and marginalization?

Today’s experience reminded me of the necessity of thinking beyond temporary gestures and striving for long-term, sustainable change. The people in need are not merely a holiday issue; they are part of our daily reality and deserve more than just a meal or kind words for a season. We must ponder how we can create systems that support not only today but also foster a better future—offering shelter, resources, and opportunities for those who need them most.

Let us use this holiday season as a catalyst for ongoing support and lasting solutions, not just for the DTES but for all marginalized communities. As followers of Christ, we are called to serve those in need—not just with words, but through action. It’s time to truly embrace the spirit of Christ’s birth—not just during the holidays, but all year long.
