Feb 9, 2025 – Standing Together for Poverty Reduction: My Reflections from the RPRC Meeting

On February 6, I had the opportunity to attend my first member meeting with the Richmond Poverty Reduction Coalition (RPRC) as a new member. It was a profoundly inspiring and thought-provoking experience that reinforced my commitment to social justice, advocacy, and community support. More importantly, it was a moment of faith—a response to my Lord’s call to walk alongside those in need, just as Christ did.

A Community of Compassion

What struck me most was the dedication of the leaders and members present. Each person was deeply concerned for the well-being of those living in poverty and on the margins of society. The discussions were not just about statistics or policies—they were filled with stories, real-life struggles, and a shared commitment to making a difference. It was encouraging to witness a community of individuals who genuinely care about the most vulnerable among us working together to advocate for meaningful change. In that room, I saw a reflection of Christ’s love and His commandment to care for the least of these (Matthew 25:40).

Alarming Realities: More Needs, Fewer Resources

However, amid the encouragement, there was also a sobering reality. The information shared at the meeting painted a concerning picture: more people are in need than ever, yet resources are dwindling. There is less funding available to support essential programs, food insecurity is on the rise, and more individuals and families are struggling to find housing and shelter. These are not distant issues—they are happening right here in Richmond, affecting neighbors, friends, and members of our broader community. As a follower of Christ, I am reminded that faith without works is dead (James 2:17). This is a call for action for the Church to rise in compassion and service.

Learning and Reflection: The Call to Action

This experience has left me reflecting deeply on what can be done. Advocacy is crucial, but so is direct action—whether through volunteering, supporting organizations doing vital work, or simply raising awareness. The meeting reminded me that social justice is not just about policies; it is about people. It is about recognizing the humanity in every person and ensuring that no one is left behind. As a disciple of Christ, I must love my neighbor (Mark 12:31) and stand with struggling people.

My participation in RPRC is just the beginning of a journey. There is much to learn, much to do, and much to advocate for. While the challenges are significant, the presence of so many dedicated individuals gives me hope. Change happens when communities come together, and I am honored to be part of this collective effort. I believe that when we walk in faith and act in love, we witness Christ’s gospel’s transformative power.

An Invitation to Walk Together

I invite others to reflect on these pressing issues and consider how they can contribute. Whether through acts of kindness, supporting local initiatives, or advocating for systemic change, we all have a role to play in building a more just and compassionate society. Christians are called to be the world’s light (Matthew 5:14) and bring hope to those in despair.

This meeting was a powerful reminder that we are stronger together. Let’s continue to stand for justice, support one another, and work towards a future where every person has access to the resources and dignity they deserve. May our actions reflect the love of Christ, who walked with the marginalized, fed the hungry, and called us to do the same.
