July 10, 2025 – Breaking Stigmas and Building Understanding: A Visit to Alderbridge Modular Housing

This afternoon, I had the privilege of visiting Alderbridge Modular Housing in Richmond—a site operated by RainCity Housing that’s often at the crossroads of misunderstanding and transformation. It was more than a tour; it was a moment of reflection and reconnection with the human stories behind the headlines.

I sat down with Emma, the assistant manager, whose insight and dedication gave me a deeper look into the realities of running a supportive housing facility. Her candor and care were evident as she spoke about the journey her team has taken—from confronting stigma to creating community. It was clear that the staff here aren’t just managing a building; they’re stewarding hope.

Since its opening, Alderbridge has faced intense scrutiny from the public. Misconceptions and stigma around modular housing—and the individuals it serves—have cast long shadows. One ongoing challenge Emma highlighted is the chronic understaffing the team has faced. With limited hands to meet extensive needs, staff have been stretched—working tirelessly to support residents while navigating public pressures. And yet, in spite of these constraints, their commitment remains steady.

Importantly, the residents of Alderbridge are not a monolith. Many are not substance users. Some are navigating mental health challenges. All of them need shelter, support, and—perhaps most critically—community. Others are on a long and winding journey of recovery from substance use. But recovery isn’t just the absence of substances—it’s the presence of purpose. It’s reconnecting with everyday life, with employment, meaning, belonging, and the kind of warm community where substances are no longer needed as a way to feel good or to escape.

What struck me most was the courage it takes to dismantle stigma piece by piece, conversation by conversation. RainCity’s work isn’t perfect, nor is it easy, but it’s purposeful. And today, I witnessed that purpose in action.

As I left Alderbridge, I carried with me not just facts, but feelings. A sense that true community begins when we choose understanding over judgment—and when we take the time to listen.
