This morning, I returned to a local coffee shop I used to frequent—a quiet corner of Richmond that’s held space for many meaningful conversations over the years. Today, it became the setting for one more. I met with Jas, who now works with Richmond Addiction Services Society (RASS), and our conversation left me deeply moved.

Jas shared his story with openness and grace—his lived experience with drug addiction, the challenges he’s faced, and the ongoing journey of recovery that continues to shape his life. It wasn’t just powerful—it was inspiring. Hearing him speak so honestly reminded me that healing is possible, and that hope isn’t just a concept—it’s something we can witness in real time.

What makes Jas’s presence at RASS so impactful is the way he blends personal insight with academic pursuit. He’s committed to understanding others—their cultures, lifestyles, hopes, and beliefs—and he’s equally committed to studying the systems and frameworks that support recovery. That bridge between lived experience and scholarly knowledge is rare, and it’s exactly what makes his work so meaningful.

I’m thrilled to share that Jas will be one of our panelists at the upcoming event, Together, from Stigma to Support, happening on August 30, 2025, at St. Alban’s Anglican Church in Richmond. This event is all about breaking down barriers, fostering understanding, and building a more compassionate community around substance use, mental health, and homelessness. Jas’s voice will be an essential part of that dialogue.

As I sat across from him in that familiar café, I felt something I hadn’t felt in a while: hope. His story reminded me that recovery isn’t linear, and that being of service—when rooted in authenticity—can transform lives. Including mine.
