Follow, Pray and Support 關注,禱告和支持

Dec 11, 2025 – A Bruised Reed He Will Not Break

Today I had the privilege of sharing coffee with Rev. Lauren Kirkey at South Arm United Church. Our conversation reminded me of the heart of pastoral care, not about changing people but about walking alongside them with presence and compassion.

As we spoke, I realized how much we share this approach. Both of us believe that each person is unique, and transformation is not something we can impose. Instead, we are called to pray for one another, to support, to listen, to welcome, and to meet people where they are. This is not only Lauren’s style, it is a conviction we hold in common.

Our passion is clear: Jesus, the gospel, justice, inclusivity, and serving the vulnerable and marginalized. Too often, progressive Christians are accused of not loving Jesus, as if inclusivity and faith were opposites. But our shared ministry shows the opposite. Inclusivity flows directly from Jesus’ love. To welcome, to listen, to walk with people where they are, that is the very heart of the Gospel.

In our conversation, I was reminded of the words in Matthew 12:20: “A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not quench, until he brings justice to victory.” This verse describes Jesus’ ministry as one of gentle strength, nurturing the vulnerable and sustaining those who struggle. It is this same spirit that guides both Lauren’s ministry and mine.

I left our time together feeling excited, encouraged, and inspired. Meeting a colleague with such a similar heart for ministry is a gift. It reminds me that I am not alone in this calling, and that there are others from whom I can learn and grow. Encounters like this strengthen me to continue walking faithfully, cherishing the companionship of those who embody Christ’s love in ways that affirm and challenge my own journey.
